Viktor Gyökeres’ injury in Arsenal’s win at Burnley has thrown many Fantasy Premier League squads into disarray.
Mikel Arteta confirmed that the striker will miss the Champions League tie against Slavia Prague, and latest reports suggest that a return before Gameweek 12’s North London Derby is unlikely.
While the issue is described as a “niggle,” the combination of his price, potential rotation when Kai Havertz returns, and Arsenal’s attacking depth makes this a good opportunity to move on.
The international break gives him time to recover, but with funds tied up in attack and midfielders offering greater value, downgrading Gyökeres to strengthen elsewhere feels like the logical play.
Here are the best replacements to consider for Gameweek 11.
Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.9m)
Mateta is comfortably the standout alternative. Crystal Palace are top of the league for expected goals (xG), and Mateta trails only Erling Haaland for expected goal involvement (xGi).
He’s nailed for minutes, looks sharp, and has an excellent run of fixtures. Palace’s attacking rhythm and Mateta’s confidence make him the most direct and reliable replacement.
Marc Guiu (£4.2m)
If you already own both Haaland and Mateta, Guiu makes perfect sense, especially for those who have already used their Bench Boost. He’s a bench option, but primarily frees up funds to strengthen the midfield.
A switch to a 3-5-2 formation allows investment in Bukayo Saka, who should now be Arsenal’s primary penalty taker in Gyökeres’ absence. Saka’s reliability and ceiling make this structural change worthwhile.
João Pedro (£7.4m)
An interesting choice given the next two immediate fixtures coming up v Wolves and Burnley. Was being mass sold last week, but more of an option again after his goal at the weekend. I still wouldn't go there, though.
It is a reasonable option, but I prefer going for a cheaper forward as it allows us to transition toward a 3-5-2 formation in the long run. Since there are very few forwards who appeal at the moment, replacing João Pedro later when his fixtures toughen up could be a challenge.
Igor Thiago (£6.2m)
Decent value, but Brentford’s upcoming fixtures are poor, with Arsenal, Spurs, and Newcastle in the next five. Hard to recommend given the short-term schedule.
Danny Welbeck (£6.5m)
Welbeck’s recent form and fixtures are encouraging, but his long-term reliability is questionable amid the fixture congestion coming up.
